Toledo firefighters battled an early morning fatal fire in east Toledo at 2126 Consaul Street.
At 6:53 this morning, Engine 13 was met by heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of an older commercial building with apartments above.
Crews first attacked the fire with a “Transitional Attack” which slows down the progress of the fire as well as cools the atmosphere inside the structure with the goal of increasing the chance of survival for any victims that may be inside. Transitional Attack is where the hose streams are directed at fire venting out the windows and doors of a building on fire.
As other units arrived on scene firefighters began an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously searching the smoke filled apartment for any victims. Engine 13 did locate one victim, who tragically was beyond medical help and determined to be deceased.
T.F.R.D. received preliminary reports that someone may be trapped inside, and were helped by a neighbor as to a possible location.
The T.F.R.D. Fire Investigation Unit is working to determine a cause of this fatal fire.
