Owens Community College presented Engine Company 6 and Life Squad 2 the 2013 Outstanding Emergency Medical Technician Award for 2013 in a ceremony on Friday, April 26, 2012.
Engine Company 6 and Life Squad 2 were dispatched to the report of a pedestrian accident only to arrive on scene to find a male victim that was run over by a vehicle driven by his girlfriend. The victim was found still wedged under the car and unresponsive, when the crew from Engine 6 made contact.
Initial attempts to extricate him were unsuccessful, and while waiting for a ladder truck to assist with lifting the car off of him, Firefighter Doran suggested lifting the car off of him. The car was lifted just high enough to pull the victim from under the car, and when the victim was clear of the car, Firefighter Davis felt a faint pulse.
The patient was secured to a backboard and treatment began on scene continuing during transport to the hospital.
Due to their quick thinking and professional care, the victim survived his injuries.
The crew on duty the day of the incident was Lt. Joe Camerato, Jared Davis, Rachel Doran, Jason Hart, Christopher Mrkva, Claudia Rodriguez, and Robert Thomas.
